The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a budget early stanley cup Thursday that will shift about $8 million from the police department toward violence prevention and other services — but will keep the mayor s targeted staffing levels for sworn officers intact. Mayor Jacob Frey, who d threatened to veto the entire budget if the council went ahead with its plan to cap police staffing, said the vote was a defining moment for the city, which has experienced soaring crime rates amid calls to defund the police since the May 25 death of George Floyd. We all share a deep and abiding reverence for the role our local government plays in service of the people of our city, Frey said. And today, there are good reasons to be optimistic about the future in Minneapolis. The City Council had initially proposed to cut the city s authorized police force to 750 officers, down from the current 888, beginning in 2022. But members backtracked on that plan late Wednesday after the m stanley cup ayor called it irresponsible. The council voted 7-6 to remove language that lowered the cap. Tonight the City Council passed a budget that represents a compromise, and also a big step forward into a more compassionate and effective public safety future, said City Council member Steve Fletcher, co-author of the proposal to lower the cap on staffing. The city also had 51 murders in January, an increase of more than 75 percent over the 29 murders in January 2015. Both figures represent unacceptable increases from 2015 and were mizuno driven primarily by gang conflicts and retaliatory violence, Chicago Police Department spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in an email. While we have much more work to do, the entire Chicago Police Department is determined to keep every Chicagoan safe. We will continue to work tirelessly on ways to stop violence, and restore accountability and trust in communities throughout the city. January s crime figures have Chicago on pace for 602 murders this year, and 3,447 shooting victims. The city has not had more than 600 murders since 2003. That s still a far cry from the 800 to 900 murders a year Chicago saw most years from the 1970s to 1990s, but it also outpaces New York City and Los Angeles, which have larger populations. A new study released on COVID-19research and clinical trials found in all cases that African Americans are underrepresented, despite stanley cup being disproportionately affected by the virus. While some blame it on mistrust in the health care system, the doctor who performed the study said outreach is partly to blame. Under-recruitment is the primary problem, Dr. Hala Borno, who released the study, told CBS News Adriana Diaz. I think if we invest in engaging with the communities we want to see enrolled in our clinical t stanley cup rials, then trust won t be the barrier. In phase three trials, volunteers test vaccines to see if they work. While Latinos and African Americans represent more than 18% and 13% of the population respectively, they are only 11% and 8% of drugmaker Pfizer s U.S. trial. Moderna s trial numbers are slightly better, at 16% and 10%, stanley cup and they are now actively recruiting minority volunteers. By contrast, Black Americans are 4.7 times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 than White Americans. Latino Americans are 4.6 times as likely. WASHINGTON — A key National Se stanley mugs curity Council aide told lawmakers Tuesday that President Donald Trump s push for Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden on a July call was inappropriate, and he knew without hesitation that he had to report it. It was also clear that if Ukraine pursued an investigation into the 2016 election, the Bidens and Burisma, it would be interpreted as a partisan play.
